Long time, no hear... An update to GLH has been a LONG, and I mean a LOOOONG time in coming. The software that runs this thing is beyond showing its years... it's practically on life support. Spammers are finding it easier and easier to fill the site all sorts of wonderful things.
Now we've got things like Facebook and other modern online social atmospheres. GLH almost seems past its prime, especially in its current iteration. I'm sure that members have either moved on, or check in every once in a while for the heck of it.
And I can't blame ya.
Why So Long? Why has it taken so long for an update? Couple reasons. If you've been following along for the past year or so that an update has been promised, you'll remember there was a struggle between coding my own forum software or rolling out a newer, already built solution. Rolling my own was going to take a lot of time, and prebuilt solutions that have the feature set I wanted for GLH tend to be rather expensive. I did finally find one that fit the bill (both in features and the amount of money I was willing to put out there on my own), but in the end, it fell short in some respects, namely flexibility and the ability to add my own features as needed or requested by you guys.
The Good News The good news is here, and it'll happen soon. Finally I've found a software solution that I don't have to code myself, has the right price, and has a FANTASTIC feature set. Over the course of the next two weeks, I will be testing this new solution out, and intend on rolling out the latest and greatest GLH no later than May 17th, just in time for Show Me, coincidentally. The new site will look a LOT better (which isn't saying much given what we have now), will function in a much more friendly manner, and will keep out our lovely spamming friends. Oh, and it'll be a LOT faster, too (as long as the servers I am using are up to task, and if not, I'll move GLH to a faster service).
And Some Bad News The new software I'll be using is completely different in every way from what we use now. Which can only mean one thing... stuff that is here now won't be making it over to the new site. This is a bummer, I know. I've fought with this for a long time, and it is part of the reason it has taken so long to do an update. But I've got to come to terms with the fact that really... although this site has some GREAT history, some hilarious posts, and lots of great conversation, no one is going back to look at that REALLY great "I am..." post from four years ago. No one cares what Friday Casa Loma had events on back in the year 2001. And we have a LOT of users here that have come once or twice and never posted. So it looks like right now, all this data will go bye-bye. I will archive it, of course, but for the most part, it's outta here.
What's Next? So, out with the old, in with the new. I will be looking over the most recent stuff and trying to find a good way to port that information over... future events, threads about the upcoming Show Me, etc. If a good solution does not present itself, I will let the content owners know, and we'll see what we can do about it another way. So fear not... critical information such as upcoming events and threads that contain critical information to the scene in general will somehow make it over.
What About My Account? I am also going to be looking at ways to bring over all your accounts. Not sure how that will pan out. At the very worst, you'll have to create a new account. At best, I'll move the current membership over.
In that worst case scenario, where all of you will need to sign up for new accounts, I will be policing this closely. This means that if Tal, for instance, tries to create a new account but finds out that some nefarious individual grabbed his old screen name first, I will take care of that. You will be able to keep your old screen name, or start afresh with a new one. Whatever you want.
Wrap Up So that's that. I'm really looking forward to the new release for many reasons, including actually wanting to continue to improve the site and work on it more, since it will be MUCH easier to improve/maintain the new codebase. And I will definitely look forward to interacting on a MUCH more frequent basis with everyone here.
Drop any questions you might have here, and I'll answer them the best I can.

Since this site has proven to a pain in the butt lately thanks to spammers, I have decided to close GLH down. It is unfortunate that it has had to come to this, but there's just too much junk on here to deal with. To make things right, I need to start from scratch, and while the new GLH is sorta there, it just isn't ready for prime time.
Maybe when I have some time I can get things started again (I wouldn't even have time to pass on the new code and go through explaining it to someone), but with helping to start the church in Edwardsville, plus planning the wedding, plus finding a place for Adrienne and I to move into, plus my 12 hour days at work, etc., I just don't have any time.
So, all of that to say I hope every one is dong well, and I really hope that you are having a great Happy April Fool's Day!
Hah! Gotcha!! Had you sweating there for a little bit, didn't I? Be sure when you tell other GLHers to come here and see this post that you don't give them any hints as to what this post really is
On a more serious note... PLEASE double-check the security of your current password. If it is super easy to guess, or is actually the same thing as your username, please change it ASAP. I need to button up the loose areas of the site, and password security is pretty slack around here.
Thanks again for your patience, and fear not... GLH will not go down without a HUGE fight The new GLH (which is farther along than I indicated above) should not have these problems, especially since YOU, my fine readers, will be able to take on the responsibility of post moderation
