Since this site has proven to a pain in the butt lately thanks to spammers, I have decided to close GLH down. It is unfortunate that it has had to come to this, but there's just too much junk on here to deal with. To make things right, I need to start from scratch, and while the new GLH is sorta there, it just isn't ready for prime time.
Maybe when I have some time I can get things started again (I wouldn't even have time to pass on the new code and go through explaining it to someone), but with helping to start the church in Edwardsville, plus planning the wedding, plus finding a place for Adrienne and I to move into, plus my 12 hour days at work, etc., I just don't have any time.
So, all of that to say I hope every one is dong well, and I really hope that you are having a great Happy April Fool's Day!
Hah! Gotcha!! Had you sweating there for a little bit, didn't I? Be sure when you tell other GLHers to come here and see this post that you don't give them any hints as to what this post really is
On a more serious note... PLEASE double-check the security of your current password. If it is super easy to guess, or is actually the same thing as your username, please change it ASAP. I need to button up the loose areas of the site, and password security is pretty slack around here.
Thanks again for your patience, and fear not... GLH will not go down without a HUGE fight The new GLH (which is farther along than I indicated above) should not have these problems, especially since YOU, my fine readers, will be able to take on the responsibility of post moderation

Thanks TheCheet!!!
To clue you in, the drop-down menus that allow profile editing, etc., now work in Firefox!! Now I can REALLY get rid of every last shred of IckyIE.
Yay.

GLH 3.0 Development Update

It's been a while (October, I believe) since I've put out an update about the next release of GLH. My new job at Reuters has taken up a lot of my personal time, as I've had to learn 3 new complex development languages in a very short period of time (VB.Net, C#.Net, and PL/SQL) to develop an application that has global implications for Reuters. It's been... um... interesting, challenging, and extraordinarily rewarding.
All that said, this brings good news/mildly bad news for the GLH 3.0 development process. The good news is that since I have been learning .Net, I see MUCH more possibilities and efficiency in this new programming language, and I think it would be terrific to develop the new GLH with all the goodies I've been learning. The mildly bad news is that any progress I've made previous to this decision will be for naught. The current development was still based on this original GLH code, which has been the base of GLH since day one back in 2000. Classic ASP (which Snitz Forums, the current base code for GLH, is programmed in) gets the job done, but not very well, not very efficiently, and it doesn't lend itself well to easy modifications, not to mention it puts out code that is not standards-compliant (all those that use Mozilla-based browsers like FireFox can attest to that, since the dropdown menus don't work and there are some rendering issues). In addition, GLH is currently using an Access database for its datastore. Access is not very efficient, not the most secure database out there, and will probably start having fits since GLH is quickly approaching 55,000 posts.
The new GLH will be based on VB.Net mixed with a very heavy-dose of CSS and will be as standards-compliant/cross-browser compatible as I can make it. The look-and-feel will be much updated, and the usability will be significantly enhanced. The new datastore will reside in a SQL database, which will perform MUCH better (GLH will be faster) and will have significantly better security.
I'm pretty excited, and can't wait to start the new development. I'm in the middle of deciding whether to code my very own message board system from scratch or to use an existing one. Making my own gives me bragging rights and I won't have to pay for it (to the tune of between $300 and $1000), but significantly increases development time. Buying one outright gets things done faster, but I will sacrifice flexibility, bank account, and bragging rights (read: resume bullet points). I'll keep you guys posted once I start mocking up the new look, and I will be asking for Beta Testers in the future when I either implement a purchased board or start coding up the core of the new GLH.
Thanks for all of your patience thus far, and DEFINITELY thank you for continuing to make GLH a great place to be. I'm proud of all of you for keeping GLH the absolute most civilized message board (Lindy or otherwise) that I have ever been on. This has happened through precious little moderation on my part, and that is a testament to the maturity and intelligence of those that use GLH. Good job!
OK. Back to work...
